Students Across Canada Call On Federal Government to Permanently Set Canada Student Grant Maximums at $4,200
October 23rd 2024, Ottawa - Today, The Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) is launching the Secure The Grants campaign in an effort to demonstrate the value that Canada Student Grants (CSG) have in Canada’s post-secondary education system and the steps the federal government can take to ensure they continue to benefit students across the country.
Every qualified student in Canada should have the opportunity to attend post-secondary education, and federal funding through the Canada Student Grants program helps many low- and middle-income students realize this opportunity. Canada Student Grant maximums are currently set at $4,200 per year, affected by a temporary increase put in place by the federal government in 2023 that was subsequently extended for an additional year. This temporary increase was applauded by students across Canada, with recipients seeing benefits across the board.
However since that time the cost of living has only increased. Students receiving the grant maximum still struggle to afford all their expenses including rent, tuition, groceries and transportation. Students are anxious about how they’ll manage when the temporary increase to Canada Student Grants runs out.
“As students navigate their post-secondary education, many obstacles can set them back on their journeys. No matter where they are in this nation, and whatever background they come from, Canada Student Grants ensure every student is supported until the end. Making the current level of grant funding permanent means the federal government is taking an important step in providing lasting support during this critical period in students’ lives.” said Ahmad Baker, Directory of Advocacy for CASA.
The federal government has the opportunity to cement student support as a pillar of their success by permanently setting Canada Student Grant maximums at $4,200. This funding can empower students to plan for their future and ensure that they finish post-secondary education on time and with less debt afterwards. CASA and students across the country are calling on the government to listen to student stories and secure Canada Student Grant funding for this generation and all generations to come.
