On September 18th 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a number of changes to the national immigration system. These changes will affect international students, temporary foreign workers and post-graduation work permit holders among other groups. The full announcement from IRCC can be read here.
Considering the new restrictions placed on incoming international students, the federal government needs to focus on supporting the international students that are already here. That support means ensuring adequate employment opportunities exist for international students who are struggling to afford their studies in Canada, and creating clear pathways for students who have completed their studies and wish to contribute to Canada’s workforce
The government should be prioritizing the permanent residency path for international students who have completed their education in Canada, and to that end CASA recommends that the federal government revise it’s allocation of express entry immigration points, specifically placing more value on an education that’s been received in Canada.
With this change, international students who are currently studying in Canada will be able to see permanent residency as a viable and beneficial path forward.
CASA is in active discussion with IRCC on these matters, and will continue to advocate on behalf of international students. For inquiries or further information, reach out to [email protected]
