September 7th 2023, Ottawa, ON - The Board of Directors at the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) is pleased to announce the selection of Bibi Wasiimah Joomun as the new Executive Director for the organization.
“I am beyond honored and excited to take on the role of Executive Director for the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA),” said Wasiimah Joomun. “As a previous international student and now permanent resident of Canada, I am a testament to the transformative power of student advocacy that organizations like CASA undertake. I look forward to continuing my work in advocating for an affordable, accessible, innovative and high quality post-secondary education for all students in Canada.”
Joomun is originally from Mauritius, and is a graduate from St. Thomas University, Fredericton, where she holds an honours degree in Criminology, Criminal Justice and Psychology. Throughout her time at St. Thomas University, Joomun was heavily involved with the St. Thomas University Students’ Union as the International Student Representative, Vice President Student Life and Board of Governors Student Representative. After graduating in 2020, Joomun held the position of Executive Director for the New Brunswick Student Alliance for 2 years where she advocated for an improved post-secondary education in the province of New Brunswick. In March of 2022, Joomun joined CASA as the Member Relations Officer where she successfully recruited 3 new members and 11 observers to the Alliance. Through her diligence and hard work at CASA, she was promoted to Director of Operations and Membership and is now CASA's Executive Director.
“Wasiimah has been an incredibly valuable and important member of the CASA team, and myself and the rest of the Board could not be more pleased with the decision to hire her as Executive Director. Students across Canada can be assured that CASA is in good hands,” Sadie McAlear, Chair of CASA.
The Board of Directors would like to thank Mackenzy Metcalfe, outgoing Executive Director, for her tremendous work and high level commitment to the organization and wish her the best in her future endeavors. The 2023-24 Board of Directors, alongside the incoming Executive Director, are looking forward to continuing the work of CASA towards an accessible, affordable and high-quality post-secondary education in Canada.
Joomun's selection will be ratified by CASA's membership at its e-plenary later this month.
