Ottawa, Ontario – March 23, 2026— Today, the Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) welcomes the announcement by the Minister of Jobs and Families extending grant and loan maximums in the Canada Student Financial Assistance program. The 40% increase in maximums, which has been present since 2023 have given extended temporary reprieves for permanent student assistance levels that have not been adjusted since 2016, despite the student cost of living rising by over 58%. This announcement follows months of sustained advocacy by students across the country, including a national petition organized by CASA’s Chair and signed by thousands nationwide, as well as a coordinated national advocacy week held in November 2025.
In a particularly challenging year for post-secondary students across Canada, student advocates have not stopped mobilizing against widespread funding and aid cuts. During the last decade, the federal government has periodically extended funding for the education of students from low-income families, recognizing the starkly rising cost of living for students that leads to homelessness and poverty shown in CASA’s report.
“Today’s announcement reflects continued federal recognition that Canada’s future depends on investing in the skills development of its students,” said CASA Chair Abdul Abbasi. “While CASA continues to advocate for more funding and a permanent level for Canada Student Financial Assistance, this temporary extension is a meaningful step forward and a reflection of the advocacy of CASA and students from coast to coast.”
CASA will continue to work with the federal government to secure permanent and adequate student financial assistance that reflects the real cost of education and living in Canada.
