Canadian Alliance of Student Associations launches national student GetOutTheVote campaign
OTTAWA and MONTREAL, March 23, 2025 – Today, the Governor General dissolved Parliament and announced the 45th Canadian general elections will take place, with polling day on April 28th. The Canadian Alliance of Student Associations and Québec Student Union, representing 410 000 students across Canada, has announced the relaunch of the GetOutTheVote.ca website to mobilize the student vote.
"Student voting is critical in a democracy," said Ahmad Baker, CASA Director at Large - Advocacy. "Whether by pledging to vote, encouraging friends to participate, or organizing group outings to the polls, students must take action to shape their future."
A significant boost to student voter accessibility comes from Elections Canada’s Vote on Campus program, which is set to operate on approximately 120 campuses across Canada this election. The program allows students to vote in advance, reducing barriers such as long lines and schedule conflicts, and vote for their home riding without voting by mail.
"The Vote on Campus program is a game-changer for student participation," said Etienne Paré, President of the Québec Student Union. "Students can vote early and choose whether to cast their ballot in their home riding or their school riding, ensuring their vote best represents their interests."
With the election falling at the end of the Winter Semester, CASA is rallying students in the final weeks of classes to commit to voting. Research shows that individuals who make a peer-to-peer pledge to vote are significantly more likely to follow through. By encouraging these commitments, CASA aims to increase student voter turnout and amplify the student voice in this pivotal election.
Students who want to participate in the campaign can visit getoutthevote.ca to pledge to vote or see if there are any campaign events happening on their campus.
