Federal Student Organization Launches Get Out The Vote Campaign

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ottawa, September 1st 2015 – The Canadian Alliance of Student Associations (CASA) is thrilled to announce the official launch of its “Get Out The Vote Campaign”, a non-partisan, student-led, nationwide voter mobilization campaign.

“The object of this campaign is to persuade students to vote and ensure their voices are heard. It’s time students step up and determine how politics unfold in Canada”, said Erik Queenen, Board Chair for CASA.

Unlike past generations, young Canadians are not participating in the democratic process. In the 2011 Federal Election, only 38.8% of Canadians aged 18-24 voted, continuing a long-term downward trend. Just as concerning is the fact that a young person is less likely to vote throughout their life if they don’t vote in their first two elections. That is why CASA has undertaken this project, with the goal of reversing these trends on participating campuses.

In total, 23 student associations, representing 300,000 students from across the country, will be leading the campaign on their respective campuses. The campaign is rooted in evidence-based methodology and employs best practices to ensure students get to the polls.

“By showing up at the polls on October 19th, we can shift the paradigm about student apathy and disengagement once and for all”, added Queenan. More information on CASA’s Get Out The Vote Campaign can be found at getoutthevote.ca
